03 Jun 7 Things to Do in Valladolid, Mexico
Valladolid, Mexico is a vibrant city displaying beautiful colonial architecture and is close to many bucket list locations. Just a two hour drive from Cancun, it’s safe and accessible. Additionally, it presents a more authentic experience than a more tourist dense destination, such as Cancun. I visited during a 9 day trip through the Yucatan Peninsula and Valladolid is honestly my favorite place in Mexico thus far! There is absolutely no shortage of things to do, so here are my top recommendations of things to do in Valladolid, Mexico!
1. Explore the Town's Streets
Exploring Valladolid by foot is easy, safe, and beautiful. It’s best to start in the city center, Parque Francisco Canton Rosado, and go from there. You’ll see the beautiful colonial architecture painted pink and yellow, and be able to walk in shops and browse at the service of your own curiosity. Ultimately you will see how the city and people in it tick, which is one of my favorite discoveries while traveling!
I also recommend taking a stroll through the town at both day and night. At night the buildings are lit, and if the town square streets are closed off to traffic, some restaurants provide dining on the street. You also never know what could be planned! One night my boyfriend traveling with me and I were out for dinner and found many of the streets were closed off and the city was having a festival at night! The street lamps were on, the cathedral lit up, colorful flags decorated the square and the town came alive with people. We stuck around and enjoyed churros, live music and dancing out on the streets – I felt like I was living in a movie!
2. Admire Iglesia de San Servacio
Right in the city center, this church is the most picturesque part of Valladolid. The old architecture complimented by palm trees makes it incredibly aesthetic and a sight I never grew tired of looking at. When I visited, you were able to go inside the church as well, just remember to be respectful.
3. enjoy delicious food at El Atrio
Although this restaurant does target tourists, it was still authentic food with a peaceful courtyard which created the most lovely atmosphere (again I felt like I was in a movie or dream!). Right next to Iglesia de San Servacio, El Atrio was so delicious, we ate there twice – for breakfast and another day for dinner. Although both meals were delicious, I especially recommend breakfast. When my boyfriend and I dined for breakfast we had the courtyard to ourselves, the weather was perfect, and the food was amazing. You could even hear the church bells ringing next door which added to the ambiance.
4. Swim at Cenote Zaci
This is a MUST do!! Even if you don’t want to swim, this cenote is an amazing sight to behold. Before my trip, I had a list of cenotes I wanted to see, but somehow this one never made it; It was completely unknown to me. While walking through Valladolid however, my boyfriend and I saw a sign pointing up a hill: ‘Cenote Zaci.’ We thought, why not, we have time so lets go check it out. We joked about it being a small hole in the ground and were amazed with what we found! The entrance to this cenote is a small stone stairway that leads into what seems like a cave. But out of no where it opens up into a whole new world that cannot be seen from the street. Because of this, it was a complete surprise and felt like walking into a new world. We ended up spending the rest of our day in this paradise, an un-regrettable change of plans.
5. Take a day trip to Las Coloradas Pink Lake
About a two hour drive north from Valladolid is Las Coloradas Pink Lake. This lake is really THAT pink – not just a filter! It’s amazing to see, but make sure and pack some snacks and have a playlist for the longer car ride!

6. Visit Mayan Ruin Chichén Itzá, one of the new 7 wonders of the world!
Just 45 minutes away from Valladolid is one of the 7 Wonders of the World, Chichén Itzá. This famous Mayan ruin is absolutely incredible to see in person and will blow your mind. It’s not the only ruin in the area though, you can spend a whole morning or afternoon strolling through the entire park!
*Also a 5 minute drive away from Chichén Itzá is Cenote Ik Kil, a beauty to see for a few minutes, but in my opinion, overrated. You can read more about which cenotes to visit here.
7. Witness the jaw dropping beauty of Cenote Suytun
If you follow any travel blog or destination instagram, chances are you’ve seen pictures of this place. This underground world is amazing to see and only 15 minutes out of Valladolid. Eery yet peaceful, this staggering cave was one of my favorite stops during my trip to Mexico and should not be missed!
Have I convinced you to visit? With an abundance of beautiful architecture, delicious food, welcoming culture and extravagant environments, you have every reason to take a break from the Cancun resorts and head to the humble town of Valladolid!
